Reading: the joy of reading
There's nothing better than reading a good book, especially when on holiday relaxing in a warm cottage when it's raining outside. My last holiday in Wales on the Llyn Peninsula I read 4 books in a week! I am an old-fashioned reader, I like the feel of a good book in my hands. None of these kindles or ipads, feels like hard work looking at a screen. I often choose my next book by the cover, size and feel of the book in the shop.

I love to see children with books. We have a reading area in nurseries and schools, which children can access freely. It is fantastic to see a child return day after day to reach for the same book and it still makes them smile. Children are eager to read and begin to repeat the story language from their favourite books. We get to the point where books are worn out by the children through overuse.

A test of a good children's book is if it becomes a core book for a nursery. We have a selection of books, which offer a range from picture books, pop-up books, number books, traditional tales, rhyming books and books with lots of repetition, which children can repeat on their own. These books are renowned as the best of the best, children love them. We focus on them every day to support children to learn to read. Our Core books include:

When teaching children I often use a story as a starting point. It inspires children, they connect with the story and it supports the topic. My favourite being the story Naughty Bus by Jan Oke with real photos of toys they are familiar with, which the children can connect to. I followed this story up with a construction project building our own naughty bus out of giant cardboard boxes. The children sat inside pretending to drive the bus and making the story real. We then had toy buses and cars with a large tray of baked beans to drive them through, just like in the story. The children loved it and talked about it for months afterwards.
